Urinary Incontinence

Monday, April 29, 2019

It’s a problem that most women don’t want to talk about. The surprising facts is that stress urinary incontinence affects a third of women over the age of fifty. Women who suffer from this condition experience leakage of urine when they cough, sneeze, laugh, or otherwise forcefully contract their abdominal muscles. Naturally, this can be a source of embarrassment if it occurs in public - which is why some women choose to wear special pads.

What causes stress urinary incontinence and leakage of urine to occur in the first place? The urethra, the pipeline through which urine flows, is supported by the floor of the pelvis. When the pelvis weakens due to factors such as childbirth, leakage of urine can occur with coughing, sneezing, sit-ups and any other maneuver that increases intra-abdominal pressure. The drop in estrogen level that happens around the time of menopause also contributes to leakage of urine.

If you’re significantly overweight or obese and experience leakage of urine, weight loss may improve the symptoms. Other drug-free ways to treat symptoms of stress urinary incontinence are pelvic floor strengthening exercises – also known as Kegel exercises and eliminating caffeine and alcohol. If these natural therapies fail to work, there are medications that can reduce leakage of urine. In rare, cases, surgery may be needed to relieve the problem.

The bottom line? It’s important to see a doctor if you have any type of leakage of urine as conditions other than stress urinary incontinence can also cause this problem. If you’re diagnosed with stress urinary incontinence, EMsella and diVa laser may be right for you.

Woodlands Medical Aesthetics now offers a breakthrough High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic technology (HIFEM) for treatment of urinary incontinence in women.

What is BTL Emsella™?

BTL Emsella™ utilizes High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic technology (HIFEM) to cause deep pelvic floor muscles stimulation and restoration of the neuromuscular control.

Key effectiveness is based on focused electromagnetic energy, in-depth penetration and stimulation of the entire pelvic floor area. A single BTL Emsella™ session brings thousands of supramaximal pelvic floor muscle contractions, which are extremely important in muscle re-education of incontinent patients.

DiVa

Unlike alternative laser vaginal therapies which can over a half hour to perform, a diVa treatment lasts just 3-5 minutes. You can schedule your appointment during your lunch break and be back to work soon after. During your treatment, the specially designed diVa handpiece is carefully positioned within the vagina using an ergonomically designed single-use quartz dilator. Once inserted, the dilator is left in place as the handpiece rotates throughout the treatment area administering laser energy with high precision automation technology—no manual positioning is required, allowing for safer, more efficient, and more natural outcomes.

diVa Vaginal Treatments

Just like every other part of your body, the vagina changes with age, but additional decline may be caused by two major events in a woman's life.

Childbirth stretches the vaginal canal and surrounding tissue, such as the labia. The vagina can mostly be repaired by the body's own healing response. But with many women, the tissue may not return to the same state as before childbirth.

Menopause and other events such as hysterectomy, chemotherapy, or even breast-feeding, may lead to reduced estrogen production by the ovaries and often leads to thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls often resulting in painful intercourse.

diVa Laser treatments improve laxity and increases lubrication. Also, it is a great treatment for Stress-Urinary Incontinence (SUI, leaking urine while laughing or during activities) so you can feel confident again.

diVaTyte addresses the skin quality of the external vagina using therapeutic light to penetrate into the deep layers of skin where collagen and elastin reside. Energy is delivered in a motion technique similar to a massage gently warming the vaginal skin. By raising the temperature, the body naturally initiates a repair and remodeling response, which over time, will give the skin a more youthful appearance.
